Do you get up and head to the gym each day because you know its good for you, or is it because of some type of external reward?  There are  many different reasons why we do things. Sometimes we are motivated to act because of internal desires and wishes, but at other times, our behaviors are driven by a desire for external rewards. According to one theory of human motivation, our actions are often inspired by a desire to gain outside reinforcement.  The incentive theory is one of the major theories of motivation and suggests that behavior is  motivated by a  desire for reinforcement or incentives. Illustration by JR Bee, Verywell Development of Incentive Theory to Explain Human Behavior Incentive theory began to emerge during the 1940s and 1950s, building on the earlier drive theories established by psychologists such as Clark Hull. How exactly does this theory account for human behaviors? Rather than focus on more intrinsic forces behind motivation, the incentive theory proposes that people are pulled toward behaviors that lead to rewards and pushed away from actions that might lead to negative consequences. Two people may act in different ways in the same situation based entirely on the types of incentives that are available to them at that time. You can probably think of many different situations where your behavior was directly influenced by the promise of a reward or punishment. Perhaps you studied for an exam in order to get a good grade, ran a marathon in order to receive recognition, or took a new position at work in order to get a raise. All of these actions were influenced by an incentive to gain something in return for your efforts. How Does Incentive Theory Work? In contrast with other theories that suggest we are pushed into action by internal drives (such as the drive-reduction theory of motivation, arousal theory, and instinct theory), incentive theory instead suggests that we are pulled into action by outside incentives. You can liken incentive theory to operant conditioning. Just as in operant conditioning, where behaviors are performed in order to either gain reinforcement or avoid punishment, incentive theory states that your actions are directed toward gaining rewards. What type of rewards? Think about what type of things motivate you to study hard and do well in school. Good grades are one type of incentive. Gaining esteem and accolades from your teachers and parents might be another. Money is also an excellent example of an external reward that motivates behavior. In many cases, these external rewards can motivate you to do things that you  might otherwise avoid such as chores, work, and other tasks you might find unpleasant. Observations About Incentive Theory: Incentives can be used to get people to engage in certain behaviors, but they can also be used to get people to stop performing certain actions.Incentives only become powerful if the individual places importance on the reward.Rewards have to be obtainable in order to be motivating. For example, a student will not be motivated to earn a top grade on an exam if the assignment is so difficult that it is not realistically achievable. Why Some Incentives Are More Motivating Than Others Obviously, not all incentives are created equal and the rewards that you find motivating might not be enough to inspire another person to take action. Physiological, social, and cognitive factors can all play a role in what incentives you find motivating. For example, you are more likely to be motivated by food when you are actually hungry versus when you are full. A teenage boy might be motivated to clean his room by the promise of a coveted video game  while another person would find such a game completely unappealing. The value of an incentive can change over time and in different situations, notes author Stephen L. Franzoi in his text Psychology: A Discovery Experience. For example, gaining praise from your parents may have positive incentive value for you in some situations, but not in others. When you are home, your parents praise may be a positive incentive. However, when your friends visit, you may go out of your way to avoid receiving parental praise, because your friends may tease you.

The Benefits of Therapeutic Riding - 1310 Words

As of 2011, it has been reported that there are 650 million disabled people in the world (â€Å"Disabilities†). Though this number is high, it is greatly underestimated because disabled people are commonly isolated and stigmatized by their community (â€Å"Disabilities†). After hearing of this extremely high number of disabled people, I then ultimately decided I would write my research paper on ways to help the disabled. Therapeutic riding has been actively helping individuals with disabilities for decades, and can benefit these unfortunate people physically, mentally, and emotionally. â€Å"Therapeutic riding, which originated in Europe, has been actively helping individuals with disabilities since the 1950s† (Shepard). These skills are carried out through the daily lives of these disabled people. They can practice them at home, at school, and at their workplace. While riding, disabled people can play games such as Red Light/Green Light, which incorporates hand and eye coordination, and verbal commands to control the horses. Just by saying commands like whoa, walk, and trot, these techniques can really help some disabled people with their verbal communication skills (Rogan). I was astonished to find out that disabled people can greatly benefit from their therapeutic riding, even when outside of the arena. The idea of someone being with an animal to improve his or her people skills is intriguing. My research suggests that disabled riders may possibly gain better people skills and sensations by being with a horse, rather than talking with a sophisticated human being. Erving Goffman (1922-1983) was born in Manville, Alberta, Canada. In 1953, he received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. Goffman was also a professor of sociology at the University of California at Berkeley, and the Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Goffman has been noted as the most important American sociological theorist in the second half of the twentieth century. The central limit theorem makes the way for different data sets to approximately assume normal distribution as the properties of normal distribution are very useful for further inferencial refernce. If the central limit theorem was not formulated then many hypothesis problems would have never existed (Lewis-Beck, 1993). Therefore the contribution of the central limit theorem cannot be denied for statistics and therefore it is termed as the cornerstone of statistical estimation. b. By precision we measure how much the original value of the statistic is approximated by the estimated statistic. Calculation of precision is very important to judge how much error is shown by the statistic. Precision can be the value of 1 divided by the standard error. Therefore if precision of the estimates needs to be improved by a certain rate then the sample size must also be increased by that rate. Now the overiding factor for estimatimg sample size includes the standard error and the margin of error and on the basis of these factors the required sample size is generated, therefore these factors are required for the calculation of sample size with proper precision. 6. Sampling error occurs only in case of sampling and non sampling method occurs both in case of sampling and census. Sampling is a probabilistic method and therefore the problems are related to those methods like wrong sample selection and wrong sample selection whereas non sampling errors include major and basic problems of sampling like design of data, data collection , therefore nonsampling error being both common to sampling and census. The first kind of nonsampling errors occur due to improper planning like lack of eligible investigators, improper data collection methods and faulty data designing. The second kind of nonsampling error occur due to faulty response like respondent manipulating answers, lack of memory, misunderstanding in part of the respondant and prestige issues e.t.c. and also due to non response. The third kind of nonsampling error occur due to errors in coverage, error in compilation of data and improper data placement by the investigator. 7. Saggy pants may be considered distasteful and offensive, but that does not mean the style should be illegal. Go ahead and call the â€Å"Fashion Police,† but there will be no arrests for such ludicrous dress. Cohen Page 2 â€Å"Sagging† is not appropriate for school. Most educational systems have dress codes because of how inappropriate or distracting an outfit can be. A raunchy dressed female student is distracting and disrespectful, just like a male student wearing saggy pants. Sagging pants so low that one exposes their underwear, needs to be added to the dress code. Union County College is a place of education, not a place to look imprudent or distracting. If a student wants to be treated with respect and dignity, that student has to dress appropriately. A student wearing sagging pants needs to oblige to the rules of misconduct and â€Å"get your pants off the ground† (American Idol). A college student should show respect to their professors as well as fellow students and dress suitably. Sagging pants will be an ongoing debate. While low worn pants can be completely acceptable in public, school systems will find the attire inappropriate and intolerable. Depending on how a person dresses is how a person will be treated. In public, sagging pants can result in rude looks or even in extreme cases, a bullet in the butt. In school, baggy trousers are considered inappropriate and unacceptable. Clothing and style is a representation of a person, therefore the wardrobe must be fitting judging upon the environment.
